14/03/1903 | KO:

In ideal football weather, Aberdeen and Victoria United met at Cattofield before 6000 spectators on Saturday afternoon in a replay of the Aberdeenshire Cup. The teams were:- Aberdeen: Bisset; Walker, Ross; Sangster, Thomson, Murphy; J. Mackie, C. Mackie, Barron, Woodlock, Shiach. Victoria United: R. Murray; Kilgour, Craig; R. Ritchie, Jenkyns, Robertson; Duncan, Steven, Lindsay, Ferries, G. Ritchie. Referee - Mr. J. McCorquondale, Dalmuir.

The United kicked-off uphill, and at once forced play. For nearly ten minutes they penned Aberdeen in their own territory, but the ball went everywhere but into the net. Aberdeen then broke away, and a shot from Woodlock scraped one of the uprights. A few minutes later Murray had to save from J. Mackie. Aberdeen maintained pressure, and from close in Barron shot hard, but the goalkeeper smartly tipped the ball over the bar. Aberdeen had bad luck, and indifferent play by the forwards was the result of their not scoring. Corner after corner fell to them, but the shooting was pitiable. The Central Parkers roused themselves, and Aberdeen's defence was in hot water. Bisset saved a fast grounder on the line from Ferries. Aberdeen retaliated, and Shiach had a good try, which Murray negotiated. Play was fast and open. After 35 minutes' play G. Ritchie sent in a cannon shot from the left touchline. Bisset saved nervously, and the outside left dashed in and thrust the ball home. Aberdeen at once replied with vigour, and C. Mackie capped a brilliant solo run with a rare goal, a swift oblique shot from 30 yards out beating Murray all the way. Bisset had a trying time, and the Aberdeen defence was hard put to it. The ball was got away and half-time was reached with Aberdeen round Murray.

On resuming the Vics directed their attention o Bisset, and after a short spell of pressure, G. Ritchie outplayed several opponents on the wing, and centred, and Steven caught the sphere and sent it flying through. The Blues put on a tremendous pressure, and throughout the second period were almost entirely in Aberdeen's half of the field. Now and again the Whites broke through the cordon of halves, only to be repelled by Kilgour and Craig, and Murray was seldom troubled. The dash of the Vics was surprising. Steven and G. Ritchie were very prominent in shooting and dribbling, the latter giving as fine a display of accurate shooting as has been seen on Cattofield. Time and again the ball was sent in with lightning rapidity from his foot, and Bisset was lucky on many occasions. Lindsay had a shot which Bisset punted out, but Ferries caught the rebound with his head and added another goal. A fourth was notched by Steven, who nipped the ball from Bisset's feet, the custodian failing to get away a rapid grounder from G. Ritchie. Shortly after time was called.

After the game Baillie Glass presented the cup to Captain Kilgour on the lower grandstand. Mr. Hugh Gaudie replied.
