Aberdeen's Under-20s side travelled to Orkney at the start of the week to help celebrate the 125 years' history of Kirkwall Thorfinn Football Club. In addition to the match, Under-20 boss Paul Sheerin, along with coach Scott Anderson and Sport Scientist Paddy Maughan held a coaching session at the Pickaquoy pitches on Monday afternoon. The session provided some of the Thorfinn's own brightest young hopes the opportunity to learn from the Aberdeen professional backroom staff.
The Dons triumphed over Thorfinn back in April 1991 as part of the club's centenary celebration when Russell Harvie scored the only goal in a 1-0 win. Twenty-five years on and the Dons proved too strong on Monday night for Thorfinn.
Aberdeen went north with a strong squad, however, it was Joe Nuttall who stole the show in the first-half as he hit a hat-trick within 38 minutes. Nuttall had opened the scoring in the 10th minute after Toby Wells had assisted. Connor McLennan doubled the Dons' lead in the 27th minute and Nuttall showed his finishing prowess by bagging another two goals to send Aberdeen in 4-0 up at half-time.
Despite Paul Sheerin making four changes at half-time, Aberdeen's dominance continued as substitute Bruce Anderson sent the young Dons 5-0 up in the 51st minute as he dispatched a penalty which had been won by Joe MacPherson.
However Thorfinn were determined to enjoy their occasion fought back and scored two goals in two minutes courtesy of a thunderbolt from Erik Bews and a composed David Delday finish.
The evening had commenced in an emotional fashion with a minute's applause to Thorfinn player and secretary Steven Miller who passed away recently. Thorfinn's players wore unique strips in memory of Mr Miller. Kyle Drever was presented with the Thorfinn Man of the Match award by Mr Miller's father, David Miller.
Thanks to all our friends in Orkney for their hospitality and we hope to see you again soon.
