While good performances by the young Dons this season have not always been attended by matching results, they brought both together with a vengeance when Celtic came to Pittodrie in the closing days of the old year for a Premier Reserve League fixture which had been switched from Glasgow because of ground conditions.
On this occasion, the Aberdeen team included several first-team squad members, but their opponents were similarly reinforced, and the home side not only avenged the 3-1 defeat they suffered on Celtic's last visit to Pittodrie in October, but also achieved a highly creditable 3-0 win despite playing with only ten men for more that three-quarters of the game.
With the young Dons leading 1-0, thanks to a tenth minute goal scored by Kenny Gilbert in a well constructed move involving Scott Thomson and Eoin Jess, young defender Greig McCulloch was sent off for a "last man" challenge on Phil O'Donnell, despite the Celtic man interceding with the referee on McCulloch's behalf, protesting that he had not been fouled.
Reduced in number, the Aberdeen players had to adjust their game to the circumstances but they retained possession to good effect and increased their lead before the interval, Ray McKinnon applying the finishing touch in the 25th minute.
The first 25 minutes of the second half saw Aberdeen call on both substitutes, Malcolm Kpedekpo and Derek Adams replacing Duncan Shearer and Thomson respectively, and the two newcomers combined for the clinching third goal in 82 minutes. Kpedekpo was brought down in the box and Adams clinically converted the resultant penalty.
