Never Recover from Early Disasters.,/p> Aberdeen reserves made a disastrous start to their Alliance League fixture at Dumfries, and never fully recovered.
The game was only three minutes old when Sharp deflected a Wales cross and Newman turned the ball into the net. The young Dons received another shock shortly afterwards, when Rutherford beat Cumming with a free kick just outside the penalty area. Aberdeen rallied and Love and Johnston were prominent on the wings, but the inside forwards were poor. Soon after the resumption the Pittodrie side fell further in arrears. Rutherford smartly backheeling the ball for Johnstone to net. Following this Aberdeen did the bulk of the pressing, but despite smart play by the wing men they failed to open their account.Source: Press & Journal, 23rd October 1933
