It was third against fourth in the Development League as the Young Dons welcomed Hearts to Forfar. Since the winter shutdown, the Jambos have recorded two wins while the Dons have lost narrowly to Motherwell and Kilmarnock. It was 3-1 to Aberdeen in the previous clash between the sides so this promised to be a close encounter. Scott Wright, Nicky Maynard, Greg Stewart and Chidi Nwakali all featured in a strong home lineup while the experienced Jamie Brandon, Dario Zanatta and Malaury Martin played for Hearts.

Aberdeen were first to threaten in nine minutes when Greg Stewart cut in from the right but his shot flew wide of the target. Sam Cosgrove and Nicky Maynard both came close after some pin ball football following a corner. A fine through ball from Scott Wright sent Stewart clear but an offside flag halted the attack. Chidi Nwakali looked good in the middle of the park, always able to find space and showing a good range of passing both short and long.
Maynard was looking lively up front and tested Mason with a snapshot from the edge of the box on the quarter hour. With Aberdeen enjoying the bulk of possession, Hearts were rarely seen as an attacking force. Joe MacPherson thought he had opened the scoring when he knocked a Stewart corner in from close range but the goal was disallowed for pushing.
Wright came close on 26 minutes when Mason blocked well with his feet. Hearts had to make a change a minute later Brandon coming off to be replaced by Solway. On 34 minutes Seb Ross hit the bar after a huge scramble in the Hearts box then Maynard saw a shot blocked. Although the game was sitting at 0-0 there was plenty of bright attacking play, particularly from the men in red.
Two minutes later Maynard had another decent effort at goal from long range but Mason saved well. The deadlock was finally broken in the 42nd minute when Sam Cosgrove turned a Stewart cross past Mason after a great Crossfield ball from Roscoe sent the winger free on the right. A neat finish from the big striker as he notched his first goal in Aberdeen colours.
A solid first half from the dons who really should be further ahead against a Jambos side who struggled to create anything in front of David Craddock's goal.

Half time Aberdeen 1 Hearts 0

A mistake in the Hearts defence gave Stewart a look at goal two minutes after the break but Greg fired his shot just wide. Cosgrove threatened again on 51 minutes when he got his head on a Wright corner but Mason saved low at his post.
A second goal arrived a minute later when Nicky Maynard curled a delightful shot just inside the keeper?s left hand post. A goal of real quality. It was nearly three moments later as Nwakali played Stewart in but a last ditch block from the Hearts defence denied the striker.
In a rare Hearts attack Ritchie was inches wide from 25 yards. Toby Wells was booked on 59 minutes after a foul on Zanatta. Greg Stewart made it 3-0 on 61 minutes firing past keeper Mason?s left hand after a jinking run in from the right hand side.
In 71 minutes Grigor replaced Logan in the Jambos ranks, Zanatta heading just over shortly afterwards after a fine Morrison cross. The intensity had dropped out of the game as it approached its latter stages. On 80 minutes a dazzling Wright break almost gave Cosgrove a chance of a second goal but Jambos skipper Gajda blocked well. A minute later Wright clipped in a lovely cross but Cosgrove couldn't keep his volley at the far post down.
Substitute Solway was himself substituted as King came on for the final 8 minutes. A couple of minutes later Cosgrove was denied by a fine Mason save as the Dons pushed for a fourth. Stewart and Nwakali came off in the 85th with McLennan and Virtanen getting a late run out. Craddock saved well from Henderson in the final minute to keep his fourth clean sheet in five league outings as the Dons ran out comfortable winners.
