Burkinshaw: Young Dons On Right Lines

Facing Dunfermline in the BP Cup-tie, the Aberdeen youths started very promisingly, but. although they dominated the play and created three or four excellent chances, the first half remained goal-less.
The Fifers presented a sterner challenge after the interval and they too had a couple of scoring chances, but it was their keeper David Hay who emerged as a likely hero when he saved a penalty kick by Derek Young in 74 minutes, and foiled a Chris Clark try in extra time.
Clark had no better fortune with the opening spot kick when it came down to a penalty shoot-out, but Aberdeen keeper Ryan Esson came to his side's rescue by saving three of Dunfermline's penalties while Derek Young, Kevin Milne, and Russell Duncan converted theirs to give Aberdeen a 3-1- margin and a place in the semi-final.

Young's penalty counter brought his tally to 22 goals in 13 appearances.
