PATILLO ABLE LEADER AGAINST HEARTS "A"
Aberdeen Reserves made ample amends for their downfall at Ayr last week by soundly beating a strong Hearts A team at Pittodrie on Saturday. There was no doubt that the homesters were the better side, but the visitors never gave up trying. Hearts were seen to more advantage when they switched their attack in the second half. Charlie Smith put the Dons on the lead in eight minutes by heading home a cross from Pattillo, and when the winger was brought down in the penalty area six minutes later Mackie scored from the spot. A revival by the visitors saw Biggs beat Kelly with a grounder, but Mackie restored the home team's lead after Moodie had been penalised for carrying the ball. The homesters soon made the issue safe in the second half when both Williams and Pattillo had clever goals. McGhee reduced the leeway with a great drive. For a long spell after this Hearts threatened more danger, with Rennie at centre and Biggs at inside-left. Towards the close Charlie Smith scored Aberdeen "A's" sixth. Aberdeen's strength lay at halfback, where all three players did well Smith, of Duntocher Hibs, who was playing his second trial at right back was quite confident while Adey also kicked strongly. Pattillo, Smith and Hume were best of the forward, amongst whom Baird had an off day. For the visitors Pope, Mess, Adams, and Biggs were seen to most advantage.Source: Press & Journal, 24th October 1938
