PATTILLO BEST FORWARD, GETS TWO GOALS
Team spirit was once more bright feature of Aberdeen " A's." latest victory. On a treacherous surface the Motherwell reserves produced more polished football, but the gritty home side fought back stubbornly to win after being down at half-time. It took the payers long time to find their feet, and the first twenty minutes' play was barren of incident. In thirty minutes the homesters went ahead rather against the run of play. The goal was cleverly taken by Pattillo who beat the Motherwell 'keeper to the jump and flicked the ball home. Inside four minutes minutes Motherwell "A" were in the lead. First Ferguson easily beat Kelly, and Wood followed with a nicely-placed shot which gave the 'keeper no chance. Four minutes after the restart Brady was brought down inside the box and scored from the spot. Pattillo put the homesters ahead with twenty minutes to go with a smart drive. Kelly was safe in the home goal, and Laing settled down to play a hard game at left back. The half-backs were not too confident, and Taylor was the best of the three. A trialist outside-right did not get much chance to show his paces, and Pattillo was the best forward. For the visitors Frame, Evans, Ogilvie, Ferguson, Turnbull, and Johnston were best.Source: Press & Journal, 2nd January 1939
TEAM SPIRIT TOLD AT PITTODRIE
ALTHOUGH Motherwell "A" produced some clever play on an icy surface at Pittodrie on Saturday, they could not match the grit of the Aberdeen reserve side, which once again made a second-half recovery and collected the points. On the hard pitch, the man in possession was the master, but few of the players. with the exception of Hume and Turnbull, the respective inside rights, realised this.LAING SHAPES WELL
Kelly brought off many smart clearances for the homeSters, and after a shaky start Laing, the former Buckie left half, settled down to a stuffy game at left back. Donald got through a lot of work despite frequent hard knocks. The home middle line was shaky for a long spell, but Taylor improved and finished strongly. Waddell and Mackie were erratic. Although not at his best, Hume again distributed the play well, but the trialist at outside right could not be judged on the day's showing. Pattillo scored two clever goals, and was always on top of the defence.CLEVER WINGER
Brown and Evans were strong men in the Motherwell rearguard. while there was much clever play in attack. in which Turnbull and Johnston were best. The latter is a promising left winger.Source: Evening Express, 2nd January 1939
