Select Turned On the Heat, Piled On the Goals
VICTORY NO FLUKE
THE series of shocks which has beset Aberdeen F.C. supporters since the season opened reached a climax last night at Pittodrie, when an Aberdeenshire Junior F.A. select beat Aberdeen "A" by the convincing margin of 6-3.
There was no fluke about the juniors' victory. Although they were three times behind, they were sharper on the ball and always looked potential winners.
Since the season opened the Young Dons have not recorded a single victory, but when they led 3-2 at half-time last night it seemed that their greater experience and training would pay dividends. Their side included six players who have played in Scottish League football.
But it was the juniors who turned on the heat in the second half. Mitchell and Wright gave the forwards grand support, and the front line had the Pittodrie defence guessing to such an extent that four goals were scored in this half.
Curran could not be blamed for the debacle. He did all that was possible despite poor protection, and was the only player in the senior side to come out of the game with his reputation unscathed.
Billy Studd, the clever St Clement's inside forward, was the inspiration of the junior attack.
Carroll caused McKenzie plenty of trouble, and the Banks o' Dee pair, Christie and Cruickshank, were a menacing left wing.
Glen opened the scoring after seven minutes, but within a minute Studd left Curran helpless with a twenty-five-yard shot which went in off a post. "Newman," playing at centre forward, restored the seniors' lead and in thirty-two minutes Studd had a hand in the equaliser when he crossed to Cruickshank, who steadied himself before smacking the ball high in the net.
Eight minutes from the interval Preston scored the most spectacular coal of the lot when he flashed in a shot with his left foot from well outside the penalty area.
Twelve minutes after the interval Carroll cleverlvy beat Curran, and shortly afterwards Christie took a pass from Mitchell, wheeled and hit the ball hard into the net.
That put the juniors right on their toes and in the last ten minutes Gauld twice beat the defence for speed and scored.
