Aberdeen fought out a 1-1 draw at Pittodrie as Rachid Belabed saw red five minutes after coming on as a substitute. The Under 21 side are still looking for their first win of the season and they certainly created enough chances in the course of the game.
The match started at a hectic pace with no less than four shots on goal in the opening five minutes. Steven Thomson being the biggest threat. In the first minute he brought out a spectacular save from Esson and two minutes later he shot inches wide. He then hit the woodwork in the fifth minute with Esson well beaten. All Aberdeen had to offer was a 20-yard effort from Zerouali, which went wide of the target. Dundee United were in total control at this stage.
United went close again in the 12th minute when Thomson cut the ball back to Winters. The youngster miss kicked however and screwed his shot wide. Two minutes later Aberdeen took the lead against the run of play. Clark was released on the left and Tiernan made no mistake in firing the cross into the back of the net. Dundee United had a chance to draw level in the 22nd minute when Anderson was penalised for an infringement 25 yards from goal. Patterson curled the ball round the wall, but Esson saved well.
Clark should have doubled the advantage on the stroke of half time. He raced forward from the left and hit a fierce shot across the face of the goal. Unfortunately his effort went wide of the far post.
Aberdeen made a positive start to the second half with Clark and Rutkiewicz going close, but it was Dundee United who equalised in the 50th minute. A loose pass by Solberg went straight to Winters and the youngster was able to stroll into the box unchallenged before chipping the ball over Esson and into the net. Aberdeen should have regained the lead four minutes later when Zerouali went on a solo run deep into the United area. Unfortunately his shot was deflected on to the visitors post.
Esson made a great save in the 63rd minute from a fierce Thomson drive as both teams searched for the winner. Aberdeen should have taken the lead in the 73rd minute. Some great play on the left created space for Zerouali. Mackie fired in his cross and Combe could only parry the ball to Clark. His effort was cleared off the line and Guntveit scooped the rebound over the bar. Combe rescued United in the 80th minute with a fine double save from Tiernan and O?Donaghue. Belabed, who came on in the 79th minute, was red carded five minutes later for a challenge on O?Donnell. Zerouali could have sealed the match with the last kick of the ball, but he headed over the cross bar.
