Dons Defeat Peterhead in Rain Soaked Friendly at Cormack Park

The Jimmy Thelin era at Aberdeen kicked off in unusual circumstances following the postponement of the planned friendly match at Balmoor Stadium due to heavy rain making the roads in the vicinity of the town impassable.

The clubs agreed to switch the game to a closed doors match at Cormack Park.

The weather did not relent but both sides enjoyed a good run out with Thelin able to field different elevens in either half.

The first period saw the Dons enjoy the bulk of the possession and keeper Stuart McKenzie made good saves from Leighton Clarkson and Shayden Morris while a dangerous cross from Nicky Devlin just evaded Ester Sokler.

The Slovenian was not to be denied and he opened the scoring from close range on 28 minutes after good work on the right from Morris and Devlin. Nine minutes later he doubled the advantage sliding home Jimmy McGarry’s left wing cross.

Skipper Graeme Shinnie made it three four minutes from the break, Kiwi full back McGarry once again the provider.

Half time – Aberdeen 3 Peterhead 0

A totally fresh eleven took the field for the second 45 and they were quickly into their stride, Findlay Marshall feeding Alfie Bavidge to allow the prolific striker to beat his old team mate Blessing Oluyemi from about ten yards.

There were no more goals in the game but Peterhead had some bright moments, mostly via the probing and prompting of ex Don Peter Pawlett who looks like he will be a key player for the Blue Toon in the coming campaign.

Peter Ambrose showed glimpses of what he will bring the team and came close to notching a fifth late on while Oluyemi showed all his athleticism to keep out a couple of dangerous corners which were heavily affected by the swirling wind.

Overall, a good exercise for Aberdeen who used no fewer than 25 players in the game and we wish Peterhead all success in the coming months.
