A keen but crude game at Pittodrie ended in a draw, Aberdeen and Dundee each scoring twice. It was a fair result, for neither team played well enough to deserve victory.
It could be said on Dundee’s behalf, however, that early in the second half they had a two goal lead, and were heading for victory when centre-half Henderson was injured, and had to go off for quarter of an hour. During his absence Aberdeen got their first goal and even when he returned he was little more than a passenger with his bandaged knee. To add to Dundee's misfortunes, Steel was also limping and in the circumstances thev emerged more creditably than Aberdeen from the contest.
In the closing stages, when handicapped Dundee were being sorely pressed. their reorganised defence put up a gallant show with Boyd outstanding. Flavell and Burrell were best in an attack that played attractively in the outfield, but lacked punch at close quarters.
Aberdeen were never convincing, and time and again poor passing spoilt their chances. One had the impression that if only Hamilton had been available they would not have had too much difficulty in beating Dundee, for there were plenty of opportunities in the goal area that went abegging because there was no one with his crafty touch in attendance. In their effort to solve the right wing problem, Aberdeen gave Rodger a trial but it could not be called a successful experiment. He is essentially a centre-forward, and at present has not the quality of a winger. Yorston worked hard throughout. and indicated that he is now on the way back to his form of last season when he was a prominent goal-scorer.
Harris was a rugged wing-half and managed to give the men in front an excellent service, and at the same time keep a close watch on Steel. Flavell opened the scoring in 15 minutes when he beat Smith in a race for the ball, and went on to pilot’ it past Martin as the goalkeeper ran out. Seventeen minutes after the resumption Flavell headed in Dundee's second goal. Two minutes later Rodger netted for Aberdeen during a scrimmage in front of the Dundee goal and soon after Yorston equalised, the referee ignoring frenzied appeals by almost the entire Dundee team, that he had been offside.
