Maybe Clyde did Aberdeen a good turn at Shawfield on Saturday, for their 3-0 victory over the Dons revealed weaknesses that they will be glad to have shown to them before their Scottish Cup campaigning begins.
For this was no happy blend that the Dons fielded. It lacked inspiration and, perhaps, saddest of all, a marksman in attack.
And, in case any Pittodrie enthusiast be consoling himself that, after all, the Dons were facing a Clyde attack that is rapidly establishing a reputation almost the equal of that of Hibs, it is as well to remember that the Shawfield front line was not bben firing on all five cylinders.
Buchanan had a quiet day, and Baird was a more subdued inside man than he has been for some time.
Must Remedy
Yes, there was a lack of fire in the attack and indecision in defence that the Dons must remedy if they are to progress in the cup.
Only Harris and Martin emerged without criticism. Harris was everywhere, probing and thrusting for the opening that would set his forwards on the scoring road, but Yorston and Glen could not carry his work to completion, and Rodger, Buckley and Hather too often shot straight at Wilson or blazed over the bar when a little more control would have brought results.
Mitchell found Tommy Ring in his cheekiest, most tantalising mood. The winger frequently had the back "wandered," but he did that to the rest of the Dons’ rearguard as well.
Smith, too, had his own worries. McPhail dodged away twice from the centre-half to score - the first time after he had "grassed" Harris in very suspicious circumstances and the second time he leaped to nod home a perfect Ring cross.
Clyde’s other goal was "McPhail-made" too. Robertson being left with the simple task of hitting home from close in.
