Aberdeen progressed to the 4th round of Youth Cup after a hard fought victory over Airdrie United this afternoon at Pittodrie. The young Dons played well in the first and had good periods of sustained pressure with Stephen Tarditi hitting the woodwork twice. The Airdrie keeper made some excellent saves to make sure Aberdeen went in goalless at half-time.
Just after the hour mark Aberdeen eventually opened the scoring. A foul on Richard Foster resulted in a free kick about 25 yards out and a superb strike by Jason McDonald made it 1-0 to Aberdeen. Airdrie came back into the game and pushed hard for an equaliser. Then in the last few minutes of the game Richard Foster went on a fantastic run and put in a cross which was turned into the net by an Airdrie player although Foster has been credited with the goal.
Neil Cooper spoke to Redweb: "Basically it was a good game but credit must go to Airdrie who made the boys work really hard. I was pleased by the overall performance but slightly disappointed we didn't take some of the chances in the first half. I thought McDonald's goal was a brilliant piece of individual skill."
