Aberdeen suffered an early setback when the visitors grabbed the lead after only nine minutes. The ball was played wide right to Doherty and his cross was controlled by Thorarinsson and drilled low past Stewart. The physical presence of the Hearts side was beginning to tell and Lithgow went close in the 15th minute heading a quickly taken free kick wide of the target. Aberdeen finally worked MacDonald in the Hearts goal in the 18th minute when he tested the keeper from the edge of the box. Two minutes later Aberdeen levelled when a free kick was only half cleared and the ball was delivered back into the danger area where Considine lashed a half volley beyond the keeper.
Kiely had a good run in the 24th minute but failed to produce a finish then seconds later Thorarinsson attempted to chip Stewart but the keeper stretched to hold the ball. Four minutes later Elliot had an effort deflected wide and from the resultant corner Bruce broke and ran the length of the pitch but didn't have the strength to finish firing a tame shot straight at MacDonald. Kiely had a great chance to set up Neill in the 41st minute when he was released down the right. He seemed to get caught in two minds and allowed the ball to run out of play.
Aberdeen hit back strongly from the early set back and the pace of the front men were causing Hearts problems. The Dons almost levelled in the 58th minute when Kiely broke through and watched in agony as Sives scooped his shot off the line. Aberdeen were level five minutes later following a mix up in the Hearts defence that saw Bagshaw nip in and score. Lithgow headed over for Hearts in the 67th minute and Thorarinsson had a good run in the 70th minute as Hearts stepped up the pressure. At the other end Bagshaw blasted over as both teams looked for a winner.
Hearts were making the extra man count and McLaughlin fired wide in the 93rd minute and Stewart was forced into action five minutes later. In between Maguire had fired an effort well wide of the target. Maguire had a better chance in the 13th minute when he was released wide right. He tried to beat the keeper at the far post but screwed the ball wide when a cut back looked the better option. With both sets of players tiring one mistake could easily settle the match in the second half of extra time.
Hearts took the lead for the third time in the 106th minute when Sives headed a corner into the net although Stewart should have collected the ball before the Defender got his head on it. Thomas replaced Neill in 111 minutes but the ten men were always going to find it difficult to force the play as Hearts were quite happy to take the ball into the corners to slow play. Some curious refereeing decisions did them no favours either as the physical Hearts side sneaked into the last four despite a brave performance from the Dons. Hearts were reduced to ten men in the dying seconds but it was too late to save the game.
