Inverness kicked off, but the Dons were first to show when a Nicholson cross evaded everyone in the 2nd minute then kept the pressure on the visitors without threatening Brown's goal. The Dons went close in the 7th minute after Byrne launched an attack and Foster eventually sent over a telling cross only for Lovell to be denied with a telling challenge from Dods. Aberdeen were enjoying all of the play at this stage until Inverness launched their first attack in the 9th minute and only a poor cut back denied the Highland side.
Inverness launched another attack down the right two minutes later, but Wyness took a feeble tumble inside the box and play was rightly waved on. Wyness had another shot on goal in the 13th minute that Langfield held comfortably, but play should have been pulled back seconds earlier when Touzani was clearly impeded. A loose ball from Crawford in the 16th minute allowed Inverness to break and win the first corner of the match. A second followed quickly and Langfield was forced to punch clear.
Aberdeen almost returned the compliment within a minute when Inverness won a free kick 30 yards out. As Langfield attempted to organise his wall about six yards off his line, Wilson tried an audacious lob that went inches wide of the goal. Lovell then went close in the 33rd minute when he looped a Foster cross inches over before Brown was forced into a fine save to beat out a Nicholson free kick. Wyness went close in the 42nd minutes when he headed a Dods flick over the bar. Referee Murray then impeded Byrne as he looked to break into the penalty area and a final attack was thwarted when Lovell was penalised as he looked to pounce.
Nicholson hadn't fully recovered from a knock picked up at the end of the first half and Dempsey replaced him after 48 minutes. Dempsey was involved quickly and managed to stick out an important foot to concede a corner. A second and third quickly followed before Black collected the second yellow card of the game after leaving his boot in as Crawford cleared. Inverness had started the second half well and a free kick in the 54th minute almost produced an equaliser when Wilson's low drive was blocked by one of his own players.
Scott Severin made his first appearance of the season in the 78th minute when he replaced Steve Crawford. Inverness should have levelled three minutes later after Smith gave the ball away and Dargo was left in splendid isolation inside the Dons penalty area. Fortunately he snatched at the chance and ballooned the ball over the bar with only Langfield to beat. Jamie Langfield then gifted the equaliser to Inverness in the 89th minute when he appeared to comfortably catch a cross then dropped the ball allowing Wilson to fire the ball into the empty net. Aberdeen had already settled for the one goal win and found it difficult to turn things round.
The game suddenly erupted in the closing minutes after a poor challenge on Russell Anderson by Craig Dargo. Dargo was booked along with Severin who needlessly got himself involved. Then a minute later Foster made an equally bad challenge on Dargo that rightly earned him a yellow card. A late penalty claim by Jamie Smith didn't impress referee Murray and Aberdeen have started their home campaign in the same manner that haunted them last term.
