A superb first half performance from Aberdeen built the foundation for the win with this performance being the best they have played all season. The Dons grabbed a deserved lead after 23 minutes when Thomas headed a Smith corner home. Aberdeen continued to dominate, but could not add to their lead. The best chance came in the final minute of the half when Kiely was sent clear but couldn't finish.
A 2-0 score line would have been the least the young Dons deserved but instead they only went in to the interval one goal to the good. United, who got a roasting at halftime from their manager - that the whole of the Bridge of Don would have been able to hear, looked better in the second half and had more of the possession in the early stages. It came as no surprise then when Feeney equalised on 56 minutes after poor marking from the young Dons at the back.
This set up a tense last 30 minutes but Aberdeen began to take control of the game again and took the lead in the 73rd minute from another corner. Smith played the ball in and Strachan powered header towards goal. Kiely got the final touch to bundle the ball home and although United pushed for an equaliser Aberdeen held out, with Thomas and Strachan very solid at the back.
