Aberdeen struggled in first half against a St. Mirren side that lined up in a 4-5-1 formation but after the interval the Dons moved to a 3-5-2 and seemed to match up better and started to take control. The only chance of note in the first half saw Paton through one-on-one with the keeper but he lobbed the ball over the bar.
The breakthrough came after 67 minutes when Willie John Kiely collected a flick on by Paton and finished well. The young Irish striker had two more chances later in the game but was unlucky with both efforts. In the end it wasn't the greatest match but it was a hard fought victory.
