Aberdeen's second string failed to make it a winning start to the year when they went down 2-1 to Athletic at Links Park, with all the goals coming before the break and Dons striker Chris Maguire missing a second half spot kick.
Early strikes from Nicky Phinn (3 mins) and Iain Williamson (14 min) saw the visitors well in the driving seat before Chris Maguire pulled one back eight minutes before the break when he latched on to an Andy Tod back header to round the keeper and knock the ball home.
Aberdeen were awarded a penalty in the 56th minute but Maguire's poor effort was saved on the line. In a disappointing performance from Sandy Clark's men, only Karim Touzani and Craig Brewster will have done their top team chance any good.
