Young Dons Progress with Five Star Performance

SFA Youth Cup Round 2  Sunday 4 October 2009 Cove Rangers 1 Aberdeen 5

Hall 44; Brown 28,77, Megginson 69, Low 78, Smith 89

Aberdeen's youth side faced their Cove Rangers counterparts in Cove this afternoon in the Scottish Youth Cup and ran out 5-1 winners at Allan Park.

Cove started the match brightly, but Aberdeen slowly started to take control and their play was rewarded with a goal on the half hour mark when Jordon Brown netted after some good build up play. The Dons had chances to extend their lead, but were caught with a sucker punch on the stroke of half time. There was a mix up at the back when a pass back went astray allowing the home side to take advantage and level.

Aberdeen showed their class in the second half as they eventually ran out comfortable winners. Megginson picked the ball up midway through the second half, beat a couple of players and produced a fantastic finish to put the Dons 2-1 ahead. Jordon Brown then claimed his second goal of the match before Nicky Low pounced to make it 4-1. Cove could well have capitulated at this stage, but to their credit they continued to take the game to Aberdeen. Stirling Smith claimed the fifth goal when he headed home a corner late in the game. This was ideal preparation for him as he prepares to join up with the Scotland U19's.

Neil Cooper Quotes

First and foremost I am delighted to get through into the next round. We knew we were the hot favourites being as SPL club with players who train full time but you have to give credit Cove. They made us work all the way.

We hit the post twice in the first half then Jordon Brown scored a great goal from the edge of the box. He has done that in a few games for us this season. I thought the goal would calm the nerves a bit and it did. We started to pass the ball about better. We had a couple of chances then we lost a bad goal from our point of view with a slip up at the back and Cove capitalised on that.

We went in one each at the break and we said to the players they have to do a lot better. To be fair the boys have come out in the second half and played really well. They have passed it well. It was a great bit of skill from Mitch Megginson, he has picked the ball up wide left and then he has cut in, beat a couple of defenders and scored into the near post so that gave us a little cushion again and then the third one was good play by Nico Gibson, it was played in, Mitch has had a stab at it but it was Jordon Brown who was in the box again who finished it off well. The score line was maybe a bit hard on the Cove boys at that point but then we got a fourth when Nicky Low whipped in a left footed cross that has gone in at the back post. We looked really comfortable at that stage then we got a fifth late on when Jamie Masson's corner has been headed home by Stirling Smith.

It was a tight pitch and there are never any easy games in this competition and credit to the Cove boys who played with a lot of heart and spirit and made our boys work all the way but in the end there was only one winner.

At half time I made the players aware of the aspirations of this club. No disrespect to Cove Rangers but we want to do well in this competition but you cannot just turn up and expect to win games. You have to work hard and show the right attitude and I felt there were some players in the first half who did not work as hard as they could. They were told in no uncertain terms that the standards at this club mean they would have to work a lot harder or it would be a long time until they play another game. To be fair in the second half they did improve and controlled the game but we were not comfortable till we got the third.

"It was an easy afternoon in the end "
