Shaughnessy at the Double to overcome Killie

Kilmarnock U19s 1 Aberdeen U19s 2

Joe ShaughnessyThe Aberdeen U19s had a very good win today. They beat Kilmarnock at the Kilwinning Sports Club. Irish defender Joe Shaughnessy was the hero of the day scoring two goals, including a late winner and the centre half was unlucky not to get a hat-trick as he had a perfectly good goal disallowed.

On a very poor pitch the young Dons started the game well but missed a couple of early chances. Nicky Low was through one on one but the keeper made a good save. Gilli Sorensen had a chance and Shaughnessy saw his effort chalked off.

Then Aberdeen deservedly went ahead after 35 minutes went Nicky Low played in an excellent free-kick and the Irishman headed home at the back post. However two minutes into injury time at the end of the first half the home side equalised. The Aberdeen defence failed to deal with a simple give and go and McKenzie put the ball past Lukasik who was playing his first game at U19 level with Scott Bain's call up to the first team.

At half time Jordan Brown was replaced by Clark Robertson. Again Aberdeen continued to dominate the game and continued to create chances. The best of which fell to the impressive Callum McRobbie who put one over the bar and failed to beat the keeper when put through one on one. The keeper saved an effort with his legs and it looked like it just would not be the Dons day.

Bolger replaced Sorensen and then Stirling Smith went off with an injury and was replaced by Nico Gibson. With 25 minutes still on the clock Ryan Jack picked up a knock and could not play on - meaning Aberdeen would have to play the remained of the game with 10 men.

Aberdeen still took the game to Kilmarnock and got their rewards on 85 minutes. McRobbie swung in an excellent free-kick and Shaughnessy was again on hand to head home.

Neil Cooper told RedWeb "It was a very good win today. We were missing five boys who were involved with the first team and Nicky Clark who is on loan at Peterhead. I heard Nicky had another very good game again today. After a couple of disappointing results I was much more pleased with the performance today."
