Aberdeen u19s v Dundee Utd u19s Balgownie 12.00pm kick off

Full time score Aberdeen 1 Dundee Utd 2

Megginson 27; Lee 2, Swanson 72

Aberdeen u19s went down 2-1 to Dundee Utd u19s at Balgownie this lunchtime. Aberdeen played really well and it was a game they should have won. The United keeper had four or five excellent saves including a second half penalty from Jordon Brown.

United took the lead in the opening minutes, but Aberdeen fought back and equalised through Mitch Megginson. In the second half Aberdeen completely dominated but could not score and they were made to pay for their misses when United were awarded a penalty which they scored.

Aberdeen u19s got off to the worst possible start when Lee scored from a corner on 2 minutes. Neil Cooper must have wondered at that stage how his young chargers, who were without 8 regular players - Hallur Hansson the latest to be called up to the first team squad, would react. The goal however did not affect them and they took the game to Dundee Utd. The Dons created a lot of chances but failed to take them. Aberdeen finally got an equaliser on 27 minutes after good play by Jordon Brown. He got on the end of a Callum McRobbie cross. He knocked it back into the goal mouth area and Mitch Megginson reacted well to knock it home. It was no more than Aberdeen deserved at that stage. Callum McRobbie hit the bar after United keeper McCallum had saved well from a great Clark Robertson strike. Jordon Brown then also forced the keeper into a fine stop.

Going into the second half Gilli Sorensen replaced Conor Devaney. Aberdeen had the wind at their backs and they left off where they had finished the first. They dominated the entire 45 minutes and continued to pass the ball about well. The Dons had numerous chances. Callum McRobbie was through but the keeper saved well with his chest. Then on 63 minutes Aberdeen won a penalty kick when Jordon Brown was brought down in the box. Brown picked himself up to take the kick but the keeper saved well with his legs. The Dons kept passing the ball about and kept creating chances but they just could not score.

United had a couple of penalty appeals turned down but when Jarvis tangled in the box with one of their strikers referee Shaw seen enough in it to give a penalty. Jarvis was adjudged to have caught the man and not the ball. It did look debatable. Swanson stepped up and sent Lukasik the wrong way.

Aberdeen threw everything at United in the final stages in search of an equaliser. Nico Gibson replaced Brown after 80 minutes but the Dons failed to create any clear cut chances. The wind behind their backs actually did not help as the ball kept going long.

After the game Neil Cooper told RedTV "We are disappointed to lose the game but I can't fault the players. The boys did very well after losing a goal in the first minute. The passing and movement was excellent today. There were 8 players short today who would have started the game. I was pleased so many of the younger boys came in and performed well."
