Devonshire Colts, Hamilton, Bermuda (Wednesday, May 17, 1972) Hamilton National Stadium / Attendance: N/A. The second match in Bermuda was also played in the National Stadium. Opposition this time was in the form of the Devonshire Colts, the reigning Bermuda Premier League champions. There were some pre-game worries: Goalkeeper Andy Geoghagen "caught a bit of the sun," and was questionable. If Geoghagen was deemed unfit to play it would leave Aberdeen without a qualified goalkeeper between the sticks, as starting GK Bobby Clark was away on Scotland duty. Manager Jimmy Bonthrone named a heavily-rotated team, with ultimately Goeghagen and Steve Murray the only two players to keep their starting positions. Even with a rotated squad, the Dons continued their strong start to the Bermuda component of the tour. They capitalised on some sleepy defending by the Devonshire side, with Jim Forrest hitting a brace: The first coming 20 minutes into the match and the second after 32 minutes. Ian Taylor made it 3-0 two minutes later. Aberdeen could have easily been up five or six at the half but the Colts 'keeper put in a strong performance. Clyde Best also played in this match and was subbed on at half time. He was involved in Devonshire's only goal 17 minutes before full time, as he jumped up to meet a corner that was saved by Geoghagen, but the Aberdeen defence were too slow to react and Alfred Dowling sent it home. This ignited the Aberdeen attack and within the next 10 minutes the score became 6-1, with Steve Murray, Alex Willoughby and Joe Harper all getting on the scoresheet. The Devonshire game marked the end of the holiday component of the tour. The Dons would next fly to the United States, going to Baltimore following another day of receptions hosted by the Bermudan locals. It was hoped to have a fully healthy squad for the start of the American leg of the tour. However, in addition to George Buchan's thigh injury in the first game there were additional thigh knocks to Arthur Graham and Barrie Mitchell, providing further worry to the future team selection. Although neither of these new injures ultimately were long-term concerns, they would foreshadow what was to come for Aberdeen in the coming weeks. Author: George Pirie
Clyde Best, of West Ham, played as a guest for the Colts.
