DONS DO WELL AT DUNDEE
The Dons made no mistake about defeating Dundee United at Tannadice, winning by four clear goals. This was the Pittodrie team's first win on this ground since the North-Eastern League commenced in August last season. It was grand team-work which carried the Dons through. In the first period there was little between the teams, but Aberdeen just deserved their interval goal lead gained by Armstrong. For the first quarter an hour in the second period Aberdeen were mostly on the defensive and, had United scored then, the result might not have been so satisfactory for Aberdeen. Thanks to grand defensive work, in which Gavin and Cooper played a great part, the Dons survived this hectic period, and were worthy winners in the end. Pattillo, Gourley and Dryden added further goals. There was not a weakling in the Aberdeen team. Gavin, the Dons' pivot, was the outstanding player, afield. He has never played better. In the second period when Armstrong went to centre, the forward line showed a decided improvement. Armstrong was an able leader and Pattillo a distinct success on the wing. Every pulled his weight. About 6000 witnessed the game.Source: Press & Journal, 14th September 1942
