A similar showing [to the St Mirren reserve match] had been forthcoming 48 hours earlier when a mixed Aberdeen Select XI beat the American touring team, Orlando Lions , 5-1. It was an ideal occasion to ring the changes and provide valuable match practice while ensuring a solid display. Sixteen players were used in all with Steve Beckett, Alan Selbie, Malcolm Thomson, Robert McRobb and Mcleod all going on as substitutes. The Dons were out to purge from their memory the slip-up of a 4-3 home defeat by Hamilton in the Premier Reserve League the previous Saturday.
Star of the show was Brian Grant who has been putting in some useful displays for the first team in place of the injured Neil Simpson. Brian scored a superb hat-trick to show that he is developing into a quality midfield man with a goal sense. However, it was John Hewitt who began the downfall of the American tourists in the opening few minutes.
Grant quickly added No.2. and then the third mid-way through the half. Orlando pulled one back from the spot before Paul Wright and Grant made it five.
