03/11/1906 | KO:

Aberdeen A traveled to Kirkcaldy on Saturday, and played Kirkcaldy united in a Northern League fixture. Teams:-

Kirkcaldy: Dorward; Neilson, Birrell; Beath, Rankine, Messer; McNulty, Burnett, Nairn, Gray, Harley.
Aberdeen: Mutch; Willox, Brebner; Davidson, Simpson, Robertson; Lawrie, Robertson, Young, Simpson, McKenzie.
Referee - Mr. Nisbet, Edinburgh

After the home goal had had a narrow escape, play was even for a time. Dorward had to save from J. Robertson, who broke away. Mutch cleared a great shot from Harley. As the game preceded, Kirkcaldy worked hard for goal, and Nairn capped their efforts, beating Willox on the run and beating Mutch with an unsuitable shot. Aberdeen then pressed, and the Kirkcaldy defenders had a hot time. The Brebner fisted the ball from a well placed corner kick, and a penalty kick was given, Mutch saving smartly. Mutch was conspicuous for clever saving, but near half-time he had to acknowledge the feet a second time, Nairn passing Willox and placing the ball in the net. In a scrimmage, Aberdeen scored.

Sensational play marked the resumption, Burnett beating Mutch within 5 minutes, McNulty adding a fourth. Aberdeen did not lie down, and after some pressure Davidson, the Aberdeen right half, scored the best goal of the match from the touch line. Kirkcaldy scored their fifth goal from a foul. Birrell took the kick, and drove hard into goal, Mutch missing the ball in his spring. Kirkcaldy pressed, and scored again. Gray shot from the left. Mutch saved, and Burnett, catching the rebound, netted the ball.

The As Do Badly.

We have often advised the A team that the finer points of the game have to be discarded in the narrow pitches of some of the Northern League clubs. Not that Kirkcaldy has a bad pitch, but their methods are to get the ball away by any and every means. There is no settled method of combination - no passing snd re-passing - hit it every time and it comes off. Our local "cracks" went into the close passing movements - pretty to look at, and on Pittodrie they have ample room to indulge in it - while the Kirkcaldy lads were not slow in bouncing on the ball and leaving the visitors behind. They are a fine built lot the home side, and having once sized up what was wanted there was no quarter. That they led at half time was no more than their due, for Aberdeen's halves were off colour. We expected a change in the second period - but no! Mutch made a couple of bad mistakes, and the heart seemed to go out of the team for they simply got outclassed at every point. Only Young, out of the whole eleven, played up to his reputation, and he was really the best man on the losing side. Such a disaster as six goals has not been recorded against them since the famous Scottish 2nd XI. tie at Tynecastle, with this difference that they failed to score on that occasion, but on Saturday they got in two goals.
