There was a plethora of goals at Pittodrie in the Scottish Alliance League match between the Aberdeen Reserves and the Ayr United Reserves. No fewer than eight were scored, three in the first half and five in the second, and from a spectator's point of view, it was one of the best secondary matches seen at Pittodrie this season. The game, which ended in draw of four goals each, was full of excitement to the very end, and the result was a fitting termination to a strenuous contest. Had there been a win, it would certainly have been hard lines on the losers. Ayr started with great vigour, and were two goals up within twenty minutes, Mackie, their centre-forward being the scorer on both occasions. Soon afterwards Robertson, the Aberdeen left-half, reduced the leeway with a long shot. The ball curled into the net, completely deceiving the goalkeeper its flight.
The second half was only ten minutes gone when Mackie got a third, thus performing the "hat trick." It was after this that the real excitement began. Aberdeen attacked vigorously, and scored twice through Stephen, the inside left. Although now on level terms, Aberdeen continued to attack in determined fashion. Fisher gave them the lead. The ball rebounded off the goalkeeper, who was lying on the ground several yards away from the posts. If Aberdeen was determined, was Ayr, and they were rewarded with the equaliser two minutes from time. Cowan, their outside left, took the ball right down and scored. The last 15 minutes of the game was fought out in semi-darkness.
