A Goalless Battle.
About 5000 spectators saw a thrilling struggle between Aberdeen "A" and Rangers "A" at Pittodrie Park on Saturday. Although no goals were scored, the game was full of interest; and a draw was about a fair reflex of the play. Aberdeen "A" maintain their position at the head of the Alliance League table, with Rangers "A" (champions) and Hearts "A" five points behind. The match was somewhat marred by a "scene" in Rangers' goal in the second half, about fifteen or twenty players being involved. With the advantage of the wind the Rangers had the better of the opening exchanges, and after shot by Marshall had been blocked, Blackwell saved from Simpson. The frostbound pitch troubled the players, and it took some time until the teams settled down. In another Rangers raid Leckie grazed the post, and then a shot by Simpson went narrowly past. Aberdeen broke away, and Donald beat McCandless, but finished weakly. A minute later, however, Moyes held a great effort by Falloon. Rangers once more took up the offensive, and only great play by Legge and Cooper kept them from counting. The home team had several promising raids, in which Wilson, Donald, and McLeod were prominent. Rangers held the advantage during this period, but the Aberdeen goal remained intact. Aberdeen were first to be dangerous in the second period, a shot by Wilson flashing inches wide. After a spell of pressure by the home side play swung to the other end, where Blackwell held a header by Marshall. In another brisk Aberdeen attack a great effort Falloon was held by Moyes. The home team kept up the pressure, and Donald, in attempting to reach a header by Wilson, bundled Moyes into the back of the net. There followed immediately a scrimmage in the Rangers goal, and it was some time before the game could be resumed. The game was very evenly contested until the finish, both goals running narrow escapes.Source: Press & Journal, 10th December 1928
