Montrose Unlucky.
The Aberdeen "A" team returned to winning form on Saturday, when they defeated Montrose by four goals to one, before 3000 spectators at Pittodrie. Aberdeen deserved to win, but were somewhat flattered by the three-goal margin. Montrose were early dangerous, Blackwell saving from McGregor, and then from Paterson. Play swung to the other end, where McHugh had to save at full length from Garden. As the game advanced the home team became more dangerous, and Wilson and McKenzie had commendable tries. McGregor ably led the Montrose attack, and in one of their numerous raids Blackwell was brought to his knees. After about half an hour Aberdeen took the lead. Garden following la oose ball placed it in the net before McHugh could reach it. Aberdeen attacked with vigour, and Polland and McKenzie both went near the mark. The Montrose attack was no means idle, and Blackwell had to save from Kennedy and Simpson. Until the interval play was of a give-and-take nature. Montrose resumed in promising style, and McCarthy almost counted with a good effort. At the other end Falloon shot narrowly past from a free kick. The visitors' attack showed up better during this period, but Blackwell, Cooper, and Legge were a sound rear trio. On one occasion McGregor got clean through, but Blackwell made a great save. A bewildering dribble by Wilson resulted in Aberdeen increasing their lead. The home team were rampant after this, and Garden added two more goals in quick succession. Just before the finish Montrose were awarded a penalty. Blackwell saved Paterson's shot, but the inside left followed up, and placed the ball in the net.Source: Press & Journal, 24th December 1928
