Paul Sheerin's team lined up with Langfield in goal, Sam Robertson at right back, Harvie at left back with Gibbons and McKenna in central defence. Barry Robson, who played for an hour, and Campanile were the central midfielders with Monakana on the left and Wright on the right. Smith played just in behind Shankland. The young Dons started well and opened the scoring after only five minutes when Cammy Smith turned his man inside the box, was hauled down by Beeston and a penalty was awarded. Barry Robson took it and hammered the ball down the middle. After that the Dons had another chance when Harvie's cross was knocked down by Wright to Shankland but his first time shot just went over. The visitors then came into the game, and at times in very difficult conditions, the match became a real battle and a midfield scrap. Barry Robson helped marshal the young lads through a difficult spell and Langfield made some good saves, one very good block to keep out McLeod. Boyce, who was in action for the Dingwall side last night, teed up Tony Dingwall but the midfielder put his shot past the post. Just after the half hour mark the Dons scored again. Young full back Sam Robertson, who had a really good game, picked up the ball just inside the County half. He made a really positive run down the right and after beating a couple of players got to the by-line before showing good composure to get his head up and pick out Shankland with a cut back. Lawrence made no mistake to score goal number 10 of the season. Just before half time Scott Wright picked up a knock and he had to be replaced by Felek at half time.
County were still battling for everything and on 53 minutes they were given a lifeline. Initially the referee had awarded Aberdeen a free kick for a dive but after consulting with his linesman he awarded a spot kick after Dingwall went down in the box. MacLeod took it but Langfield diving to his left made a very good save. On 65 minutes Aberdeen scored again. An excellent Felek free kick was won by McKenna. Although his initial effort was blocked the defender reacted quickly to slot home from close range. Ross County to their credit never stopped battling and it another couple of excellent saves from Langfield to keep them out plus some really good blocks from Gibbons and Harvie. The defence worked really hard to make sure they kept a clean sheet.
