A 1-1 draw in Saturday's match was a fair result. The young Dons had a very good first half and led 1-0 at the interval but in the second period Dunfermline were the better team. All in all, it was a terrific game in deplorable conditions of wind and rain. A slippery ball which sometimes skidded off the sodden surface or was trapped in a pool of water made it the kind of day goalkeepers dread. But Andy Geoghegan and the home keeper, George Thomson, came through with flying colours. Andy played a big part in holding the Fifers at bay in the second half when they stormed the Aberdeen goal and Thomson put up the shutters when the young Dons might well have established a winning lead in the first half. The last time I saw Thomson give a display like this it was FOR the Aberdeen reserves. A couple of seasons ago, he played a trial for us against Celtic at Parkhead - Bobby Street was also given an outing that day. Bobby is showing a lot of his old dash after coming back from a leg break but he is just a wee bit too impetuous on occasion. He put the young Dons ahead in the ninth minute against Dunfermline after good work by John McMaster but, with a cooler head, Street should have snapped up at least one of three more good chances which came his way.
Both our substitutes were used. Irish centre Noel Ward took a knock on the shin bone and had to be reĀ¬placed by Charlie Esslemont at half-time and Duncan Davidson came on for Walker McCall in the 75th minute. Walker, a flu victim recently, was feeling the pace on a strength-sapping surface.
