Opening Burst Settles It For Young Dons

The Aberdeenshire Cup presented a stiffer challenge for the young Dons, two games being required to account for Fraserburgh in the semi-final, a repeat of the struggle they had against Buckie Thistle in the previous round. Lack of commitment from some of the Pittodrie players was the main point of criticism in a very disappointing 1-1 draw at Bellslea Park, Lee Gardner claiming the equaliser, and the visitors had to thank Michael Watt for keeping them in the competition with a couple of fine saves to foil breakaway Fraserburgh raids in the second half of a very close game.
The Aberdeen line-up was considerably strengthened for the replay at Pittodrie and there was a marked improvement as the young Dons went on to a 4-1 victory. The first-half performance, in fact, was described by former Aberdeen and Scotland goalkeeper Bobby Clark as the best display of football he had seen since his return on holiday from the United States. Eoin Jess and Scott Booth each scored twice before the interval, but most of the Highland League's problems were caused by the wing play of Andy Roddie, two of the goals steaming in from his accurate crosses.
