Motherwell v Aberdeen 20 January
dons look to bounce back into european contention
Karim Touzani is back in contention.

25 January 2007 20:59

The postponement of last week's fixture at Motherwell gave the Dons a much needed break after their Scottish Cup exit, but it also allowed Hearts to leapfrog them into third place. With Hearts facing Rangers this weekend it's vital that Aberdeen return to winning ways to take advantage of any slips that the two might make. Having lost a late equaliser on their last visit to Love Street the Dons will be determined to take all three points to keep their European quest alive.

The Paisley side made a great start to the campaign but have since found life in the SPL tougher as the campaign progressed. However, they are a well-organised outfit who show great battling qualities and the Dons won't find it easy. Jimmy spoke to Redweb ahead of the weekend match and gave an update on the latest injury news.

"Jamie Smith and Zander Diamond both had their operations yesterday and the surgeon is pleased with how both the procedures went. They will start their rehabilitation tomorrow and it will probably be about six weeks before they are back playing. Brewster is also six weeks away from returning but with the way the fixtures have worked out it looks like they will only miss three games. Byrne is about two weeks away from coming back, which is great for him and for the team. Touzani is back and available for selection along with Kyle Macaulay who has returned from his loan spell with Peterhead."

Jamie Smith will be out for six weeks as will Diamond and Brewster.

Redfact: Joe Harper is among a host of Aberdeen players who have scored hat tricks against St Mirren in the past. Harper claimed his hat trick in the tense meeting at Pittodrie in 1978 with Aberdeen pushing Rangers all the way for the title. Harper hit three against Alex Ferguson's St Mirren in a 4-2 win at Pittodrie. Matt Armstrong was the first Dons to hit three against St Mirren in 1937. Stan Williams, Alex Kiddie, Drew Jarvie, Charlie Nicholas and Arild Stavrum have all scored three against St Mirren in past league meetings.

The squad were given a boost ahead of the weekend with three players being called up for international duty. Jimmy commented: "Considine (U21's), Bagshaw (U19's) and Maguire (U19's) have all been called up for Scotland which is great for the lads as it gives them some good experience and boosts their confidence.

Returning to the weekend match Jimmy is looking for his men to reassert themselves and bounce back from their Scottish Cup disappointment.

"Something has got to give between Rangers and Hearts this weekend so it is vital that we capitalise on that and take all three points against St Mirren. We need to get back to winning ways and start of another good run. We know it is going to be hard as St Mirren compete for every ball and are enthusiastic, so we need to match them in these areas and then allow our quality to come out."

Darren Mackie was on target the last time the teams met.

Redfact: In previous Pittodrie league meetings Aberdeen scoring legend of the 20's Benny Yorston scored the clubs 50th league goal against St Mirren in March 1930. The talented Hughie Hay was the Dons 100th goal scorer against the Buddies when he scored in the Dons 4-1 win in January 1957. The 150 milestone was reached when Gordon Strachan scored in the Dons 4-0 win in November 1982.

It was during the reign of Alex Ferguson at Pittodrie that began a period of transfers between both clubs. The highest profile move was that of Peter Weir who became the record transfer between two Scottish clubs in 1981 when Aberdeen paid St Mirren 330,000 with Ian Scanlon moving to Paisley. Ferguson also brought in Steve Cowan and Doug Bell on free transfers from his previous club. In 1984 as a replacement for Mark McGhee, the Aberdeen manager paid St Mirren 100,000 for striker Frank McDougall who went on to enjoy two marvellous seasons at Pittodrie. Tomorrow we will be publishing an interview that Frank did with the RedMatchday magazine last year.

Another Aberdeen legend that had to be replaced was Gordon Strachan and it was St Mirren midfielder Billy Stark who was brought in to supplement the Aberdeen side of 1983 that could do little wrong back then. In 1989 Aberdeen boss Alex Smith paid St Mirren 300,000 for their captain David Winnie. Three years later after Willie Miller had replaced Smith as manager, the new Aberdeen boss found his assistant manager Roy Aitken who was then with St Mirren.

This week's match has a traditional 3pm kick off and if you can't make it to Paisley this Saturday you can still listen to the action via RedTV. Dave MacDermid will be on hand to keep you up to date with all the action from 2:45pm. Remember to return to RedTV on Monday to catch the highlights!
