Brought to Pittodrie as assistant manager by then manager Alex Miller, Paul was thrust into the managerial post when Miller was sacked during season 1998/99 and managed to hold things together during a difficult spell of games, ensuring that relegation was not the outcome of a very poor season for the Dons. Despite some positive comment, Hegarty was not offered the permanent job of manager and let the club in 1999.
