Joined the Dons as a left winger, but was behind George Mulhall in the pecking order and played mainly in the reserves - sometimes at left back. Manager Tommy Pearson did not appear to consider him first team material and was released from Pittodrie, moving to the Highland League with Elgin City. He later reflected that his insistence on completing his bookbinder's apprenticeship may have hampered his first team chances.
Later moved to England with Notts County and was converted to a midfield player. After retiring from playing, Bobby spent some time managing in the Midlands League. Later he worked as a sales rep for Levi Strauss, managed a sports' shop and went into local politics in Gedling Borough.
