Dickie began his professional career in 1957 when he joined Aberdeen from local club Banks O' Dee. He was a member of the Banks O' Dee Scottish Junior Cup winning side in 1957 when they beat Kilsyth Rangers 1-0 in front of a crowd of 30,800 at Hampden Park. John “Tubby” Ogston was goalie that day and he also went on to play for Aberdeen.
During 1957 Dickie won 3 Scottish Junior International Caps playing in 3 winning matches, on 9th February at Firhill against Ireland winning 3-2, 16th March at Tynecastle against Wales winning 3-1 and on 29th March in Dublin against Eire winning 3-1.
Dickie went on to win an Under23 Cap for Scotland in 1958 at Tynecastle losing 1-0 to Wales
