In season 53-54 he appeared 27 times and scored seven for St Johnstone where he was on loan before being transferred to Burnley in March 1955. He scored his first Burnley goal in March 1956 against Sunderland at Turf Moor.
Over the next two seasons the flying wingers form was good enough to earn selection for Scotland's original party of 40 for the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. He played 98 games for the Clarets and scored 21 goals before being transferred to Stoke City in season 1959-60 where he made 32 appearances and claimed another 5 goals. Through the first half of the sixties Doug played for St Johnstone, Airdrie and Forfar Athletic where he also had a brief spell as manager.
Doug was latterly a member of the AFC Former Players Association and was a regular participant in the annual golf outing.
