Paul spent the 2009-10 season in the English Championship with Bristol City, and has had spells at Hamilton Academical, Millwall, Raith Rovers, Hibernian, St Johnstone and Heart of Midlothian before he signed for Celtic in January 2007. He earned his first Scotland Cap under Walter Smith in March 2005 against Italy at the San Siro and has played for his country on 25 occasions, scoring one goal. He was involved in Scotland's last outing, the 1-0 victory against the Czech Republic in March.
Paul's debut for Aberdeen against Hamilton Academicals went stright into the record books when he scored a hat-trick of penalties in a 4-0 win. This rare feat had never previously been managed in the SPL.
Sadly the season ended early for paul because of injury and just before Aberdee's last match of the season, he announced his retirement from playing and the Club cancelled his contract. A few days later, he was appointed player-manager at Alloa Athletic.
