proposed street litter penalty

Aberdeen Town Council are aiming at a big drive against the litter problem in the city streets. Under a new Provisional Order they are seeking powers to make it an offence, with a penalty of 40s, to throw disused tramway or bus tickets on the streets, and also to make it an offence to distribute bills, leaflets, pamphlets, or circulars in the streets without the permission of the Council. Councillor Thom, convener of the Cleansing Committee, said one of the worst instances of the litter problem was the issuing of pamphlets outside Pittodrie Park on the occasion of football matches.

"Perfect Disgrace" Referring to the general question of litter, he said the streets of Aberdeen were becoming a perfect disgrace. Some of their own tramway and bus conductors swept used tickets off the platform on to the streets. The Council are also seeking powers to build a £194,000 bridge which will link up a new road with the road leading to Stonehaven, Montrose, Arbroath, and Dundee. It is also proposed to widen Merkland Road and Pittodrie Street in order to lay a tramway loop line to cope with the football crowds to Pittodrie on Saturdays.
