a gift from the faroes

One of the more unusual and certainly one of the more macabre mementoes that the dons have brought back from their travels around the world, is this miniature whale hunting kit. The more sensitive amongst us would probably not wish to know exactly how the real equivalent would be used.

This was a gift to the Dons in August 1980 when the travelled to the Faroe Islands to play a friendly match against Torshaven, where they had a comfortable 5-1 victory, Ian Scanlon scoring twice with Drew Jarvie John McMaster and Andy Watson scoring the other goals.

The presentation case measures sixteen inches by 10 inches and has a small plaque engraved with the names of the teams. Strangely, this gift has never been on show in the boardroom, and it was not recorded whether any of the players sampled any whale products whilst on the islands.
