Notwithstanding the strong counter attraction at Chanonry, there was a goodly muster of spectators within the walls of Wellington Grounds to witness a friendly game between the ground eleven and one of the best of the army teams - that of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. The strangers kicked off with the wind to aid them and invaded home territory. The strong defence of the Vics was more than equal to the attack, and soon the ground forwards began to harass the strangers' back division. The full-backs were an excellent pair, but could not cope with their more experienced opponents, who scored two goals. In the course of the second half, the home score was raised to five. The warriors, however, by a good spurt were able to get the ball twice through the goal, and thus to minimise their defeat. Result: United, 5 : Highlanders, 9.
