Victoria United had a visit from a reserve team of the Heart of Midlothian, which included such well-known players as Taylor, Fairbairn, and Maxwell. There was an excellent attendance of spectators. Winning the toss, the visitors played westwards, and, about ten minutes after the start, Philip, their outside left, notched their first point. This made matters lively. Victoria United worked with might and main till McFarlane equalised. Gray scored a second point a few minutes later, and before the close of the first period McFarlane again distinguished himself by scoring a third goal. Soon after crossing over, the visitors scored twice, Philip having the honour on both occasions. The teams being now on equal terms, some exciting play was witnessed, and there was every prospect of a close finish. The United, however, again took matters in hand, added two goals, and finally ran out the winners by 5 goals to 2.
