Montrose 7 - 0 The Aberdeen
Kick Off:
Attendance: 0
Venue: Links Park, Montrose
Fresh from the victories over their local rivals, Aberdeen paid a visit to Montrose to play off a friendly fixture with the Links Park team. Contrary to expectation, the game proved of a rather one sided nature, the home team winning easily by 7 goals to 0. Aberdeen lost the toss, and Toman kicked off. Montrose almost immediately took matters in hand, and fairly took the strangers' breath away by the rapid manner in which they piled on goals. In fact the game had been in progress only about ten minutes when Montrose led by four goals. This seemed to damp the spirits of the strangers considerably, whereas the home team played with an amount of dash and confidence that fairly upset the Aberdeen defence. With the exception of an occasional visit to the Montrose custodian, Aberdeen had scarcely a look-in in the first half, which ended with Montrose leading by 4 goals to 0.

The second half was almost a repetition of the first, with this exception, however, that though Aberdeen had considerably more of the game than they had in the first period, they had the same quota of luck as regards points. Montrose, on the other hand, added three more goals to their already large total, and, as previously stated, Aberdeen had to retire from the field hopelessly beaten. It is but fair to state that the strangers were not strongly represented, lacking the services of Turner and Allott forward. Smyth, it may also be said, was in no way to blame for the large score against him. He did some remarkable saving, but, as usual, was badly supported, and consequently he came in for a good deal of rough handling. The referee left something to be desired; he is a local man, which fact speaks for itself. Like many another referee, his ideas of the off-side rule seem to be decidedly hazy, Montrose certainly deserved their victory, but 4-0 would have been a more correct result.
