Dons keep Bulgars at bay behind the iron curtain |
 |
Aberdeen's fifth place in the league was enough to secure the Dons first and last participation in the European Fairs Cup. It was also to be the Dons first venture behind the iron curtain. The two major tournaments had been redrawn to segregate east from west following the Soviet invasion of Czechoslavakia but despite protests from the Dons they were forced to travel to Bulgaria for the first leg. In the end the Dons adopted a 5-2-3 formation and played the perfect away European tie as they returned west with an acceptable no scoring draw.
