match report 1939-40 fixture list
Aberdeen 4 - 1 Clyde
Kick Off:    Smith 11, Armstrong 35, Strauss 45, Armstrong 40.       Taylor 6
Attendance: 3,000
Venue: Pittodrie Stadium, Aberdeen
Bright football was seen at Pittodrie yesterday in the game between Aberdeen and Clyde, the Scottish Cup holders.

On play it is doubtful there was three goals between the teams. The Dons won and deservedly so, because they took their chances. The Shawfield attackers were clever and nippy, but their finishing was below par.
The Dons were slow to start, but once they found their feet they were a dangerous combination. The defence was generally sound, with Cowie and Waddell outstanding. Armstrong was the best of the forwards, and the fact that he scored two goals testifies to his shooting ability.
Strauss was always dangerous in possession, and Bain, who showed clever touches, had a hand in two of the goals.
Brown, Hickie and Beaton were the strong men in the Clyde rear. Kirk was handicapped by an injury received at the start of the second half. Wallace was a strong, forcing forward, and Agnew was often dangerous.
All five goals were scored in the first half. Clyde took the lead after six minutes' play. Wallace laid the foundation for this goal, which Taylor headed from a cross from Gillies.
With eleven minutes played the Dons drew level. Strauss gathered a clearance from Kirk and crossed for Smith to send into the net first time. Ten minutes from the interval Bain took the ball through and parted to Armstrong, who found the net with a glorious drive.
When Telford and Hickie missed a cross from the right five minutes from the interval, Armstrong got another chance, which he was quick to seize. Just on half-time trauss made the total four from a cross from Bain.
