match report 1891-92 fixture list
Victoria United 6 - 5 The Aberdeen
Kick Off:    Ferries, Ferries, Sinclair, ?, ?, ?       Whitehead, Key, ?, ?
Attendance: 0
Venue: Victoria Bridge, Aberdeen
This important local fixture was played at the Victoria Bridge Grounds before an enormous assemblage of spectators. Although the weather was all that could be desired the ground was very heavy, and, consequently, anything like steady combination on the part of the players was considerably hampered. Both teams were strongly represented. Lambie of the Queen's Park (Hampden Eleven) occupied the place of Taylor as outside right for Aberdeen.
In the first half the Victoria were favoured by a slight breeze, and play was almost altogether confined to Aberdeen territory. Shortly after the start Ferries notched the first goal for the Victoria. Play became fast, and the same player headed a second point, and yet another followed - this time to Sinclair's credit. The Aberdeen then made a determined effort, and Whitehead managed to reduce the Victoria's lead. Key also beat Cannon with a finely delivered shot. The United, however, again assumed the aggressive, and before half-time secured other three goals. On crossing over, the game stood: Victoria 6, Aberdeen 2.
Throughout the latter period the ground team were kept, with the exception of one or two invasions, upon the defensive, and a well-contested game ended: United 6, Aberdeen 5.
In the first period Ketchen had to retire owing to an accident, and during his absence from the field two goals were scored. Sinclair also had to abandon play within the last ten minutes of the game. The play on the whole was splendid, but not without a symptom of roughness at times. As indicated, combination was sadly lacking on both sides.
