Peterhead 2 - 9 Victoria United
Kick Off:
Attendance: 0
Venue: Recreation Park, Peterhead
These clubs met each other for the first time on Saturday afternoon in the Recreation Park, Peter-head, There was a large number of spectators, including a goodly number of ladies. The Vics kicked off against a slight breeze of wind, and within a minute of the start they had the ball through the home goal. Peterhead had next a look in and equalised Each goal continued to be visited for some time, and play was fast. Cowie, the Peterhead custodian, saved some grand shots from the Aberdeen forwards. A run by the Peterhead forwards ended in the ball being sent through. The Vics commenced to show up better, and by a mistake on the part of one of the Peterhead backs the ball went through his own goal. From a scrimmage in front of the goal, the Aberdeen again scored. Up to half-time no more scoring took place, and ends were changed, when the strangers were leading by 3 goals to 1.
With the wind in their favour it was thought that the Vics would carry everything before them, but Peterhead made a stubborn resistance, and defied the strangers for a time. Several attempts by the Peterhead men to break through the Aberdeen proved fruitless. Pressure was still being put on Cowie, but the second portion of the game was twenty minutes old before they found an opening. Goal after goal followed, obtained chiefly from scrimmages in front of the home goal until time was called, when the Vics, came out victorious by 9 goals to 2.
Cowie, the Peterhead goal, played a capital game, being cheered again and again as he cleared his lines when attacked by the whole line of forwards.
