A Discouraging Result |
 |
This league fixture came off at Carolina Port, Dundee. The weather was dull and a strong easterly wind was blowing, but the ground was in good condition.
The East End kicked off against a strong wind and rushed the ball up to their opponents' citadel, but an abortive corner was the only result. The Aberdeen retaliated, but the East End kept them well in check, although they failed to get away, the strong wind telling severely against them. Some time afterwards Cobban one of the Aberdeen half-backs was injured, and had to leave the field, but he, fortunately, was able to resume. Aberdeen passed for a time, and the East End goalkeeper failing to manoeuvre a shot, the ball was almost put through, but an East-Ender kicked out before the ball had crossed the Rubicon. The strangers claimed a goal, but the referee disallowed it. Mackie afterwards sent in a hard one, but it was successfully negotiated, and, the home team breaking away, Gilligan beat Low with a smart shot.
On crossing over with 2 goals to their credit, the East End had most of the play, and, aided by a strong breeze, they put on 6 more goals. Play so one-sided became uninteresting, and the final result was East End 8, Aberdeen 0. The Aberdeen players were without the services of Mackie in the second half.

Disappointment was general in the city on Saturday eve on it becoming known that the vigorous East Enders had wiped out Aberdeen by the rather heavy score of 8 goals to nil on the ground of the Dundee club. The Causes of the disaster were many. In the first place, Colin Ross was unable to go, and Key was given a rest, and consequently the team had to be re-arranged. Then their luck was at starving point, as do what they might they couldn't get the sphere through, and when they did manage it the referee decided against them, a decision which even the Dundee Spectators cried out against. Then Cobban got laid out, and was not himself afterwards. Up to this point the homesters had not scored, but putting all in on seeing their opportunity they scored twice before half time. Then to put a finish on the luck of the Aberdeen Mackie could not play in the second half, having also sustained an injury, we are informed. With the wind behind them, the East End did almost as they liked, and ran on the goals at the double. Lowe was not in very good trim, but then he hasn't such robust gentlemen against him every day. In the midst of such a disaster it is very pleasing to know that both Wood and Ketchen were all there, Tom again coming up top with a rattling good show. Thomson put in some excellent work at half, but the forwards were below par. However, gentlemen, the fates were against you you'll do better another time.
