match report 1915-16 fixture list
Div 1 (Old)
04/09/1915

St. Mirren 3 - 2 Aberdeen
Kick Off:    Smart, Brown, Steele       Robertson, Wright.
Attendance: 4,000
Venue: St Mirren Park (Love Street), Paisley
The match between St Mirren and Aberdeen at Paisley was a very tame affair. Neither side settled to its accustomed form, and little in the way of combination was witnessed. St Mirren were slightly stronger throughout, and, through Smart, scored twenty minutes from the start. The only retained the lead for a few minutes, however, when Robertson equalised, Hillcoat, the Paisly custodian, being apparently blinded by the sun. Brown quickly put the Saints again on the lead, and up to the interval there was no further scoring. The quality of play did not improve in the second half, and the game was lacking in interesting features. About midway in this portion of the match Wright put Aberdeen again on equal terms, but three minutes later, from a corner kick, Steele diverted the ball past Greig. In the last minute Saints were awarded a penalty, but Brown shot past. St Mirren merited their win. About 4000 spectators were present, including wounded soldiers from the Alexandra Infirmary, for whom seats were provided in front of the pavilion.

Aberdeen's visit to Paisley resulted in another defeat, Saint Mirren winning by 3 goals to 2. Fully 4000 spectators witnessed the game, which was keenly fought. Aberdeen opened well, but Saint Mirren were the first to score, Smart netting from a cross by Brown. 5 minutes later Aberdeen drew level through Robertson. Just before half-time Saint Mirren obtained a second goal. Gray made good progress on the right, and swung across a low ball. Brown got possession, and scored with a smart shot. Before half-time, Main got a splendid opportunity, with only the goalkeeper to beat, but sent the ball behind.

On the resumption, the ground team applied the pressure, and Colman and Hume were kept busy. Greig saved neatly at a critical moment. Archibald was prominent in succeeding attacks by Aberdeen. Saint Mirren transfer the ball to the other end, and gave Aberdeen's defence and deal of work to do. Again the northern side got off on the offensive, and a Wright equalised the scores. It seemed as if there were to be a division of the points, but 2 minutes later steel gave Saint Mirren a third goal. Just before time Saint Mirren were awarded a penalty off Colman, but Brown shot past.
