On their own ground, Ayr United were without Nevin, who played in place of Richardson at centre forward, all through the second half and for a considerable part of the first, and had a hard struggle to get full points from Aberdeen. Ayr were the better lot in the first half, but only scored once through McLaughlan from a penalty. The second half was full of go, and play, if not brilliant, was always interesting. A movement in which McKenzie, Ingram, and Jackson took part resulted in a fine goal for Ayr. The next minute Main cleverly headed through for Aberdeen. Rain fell heavily, and the attendance was not above 2000.

Ayr United were without Richardson, their crack centre, and Aberdeen were even more handicapped without Colman, J. Wyllie, and J. F. Cumming. Play was equal in the first half, near the end of which Ayr scored from a penalty. Robertson ought to have opened Aberdeen's account before that, shooting high over when well placed, and sending harmlessly past with only the custodian to beat on another occasion. Nevin, who had Richardson's place, went off injured before the interval, and was unable to resume.
Aberdeen did a lot of pressing after the restart, and the Ayr goal ran a number of narrow escapes. The home side increased their lead, and the next minute Main headed through Aberdeen's first and only point, their persistent efforts to equalise being beaten back.
